Prof. Maarit Karppinen
Department of Chemistry and Materials Science
Aalto University, Finland
Prof. Maarit Karppinen her doctor degree in inorganic chemistry from the Helsinki University of Technology in 1993. After that she built a strong research group focusing on functional oxide materials for emerging energy technologies at the Materials and Structures Laboratory, Tokyo Institute of Technology in Japan. In 2006 she returned back to Finland to combine her expertise in functional oxide material research to the ALD thin-film technology experience accumulated in her present Inorganic Materials Chemistry Laboratory at Aalto University in Finland. Karppinen was nominated as Academy Professor in Finland for 2009-2013, a member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters since 2010, and as Aalto Distinguished Professor since 2017. In 2013 she received her ERC Advanced Grant for the ALD/MLD inorganic-organic hybrid materials, followed by ERC Proof-of-Concept Grants in 2016 and 2017 for flexible thin-film thermoelectrics and Li-ion thin-film microbattery. In 2014 she spent the summer term as a visiting professor at Oregon State University in USA, and in 2016 she was nominated as a visiting international professor at the Faculty of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the Ruhr-University Bochum.
